We released seeds of two sympatric tree species, Corylus mandshurica (seed with thinner seed hull, higher nutrition) and C. heterophylla (seeds with thicker seed hull, lower nutrition) in the masting year of C. mandshurica in 2008, and C. heterophylla in 2009, respectively, to investigate how seed masting of the two sympatric Corylus species affects seed removal and dispersal fitness of the two species differently at both intra- and inter-specific levels. At intra-specific level, the authors found mast seeding of both C. mandshurica and C. heterophylla significantly reduced seed removal, seed consumption, but increased seed dispersal distance and seed dispersal fitness of the released seeds. Mast seeding of C. mandshurica increased seed caching of C. mandshurica. At inter-specific level, the authors found mast seeding of C. mandshurica reduced seed removal of C. heterophylla, but mast seeding of C. heterophylla did not significantly reduce seed removal of C. mandshurica. Mast seeding of C. mandshurica reduced seed consumption of C. heterophylla, while mast seeding of C. heterophylla reduced seed consumption of C. mandshurica. We found mast seeding of C. mandshurica significantly reduced seed dispersal distance of C. heterophylla, while mast seeding of C. heterophylla significantly increased seed dispersal distance of C. mandshurica. We found that mast seeding of C. mandshurica significantly increased seed dispersal fitness of C. heterophylla, while mast seeding of C. heterophylla did not significantly increase seed dispersal fitness of C. mandshurica. More studies are needed to reveal the ecological consequences of mast seeding at inter-specific or community-level. Seed traits may attribute the differences of mast seeding at inter-specific level. Because seeds with thinner seed hull and higher nutrition were more harvested and eaten by rodents, mast seeding of C. mandshurica might have reduced seed removal and seed consumption, but increased dispersal fitness of C. heterophylla (seeds with thicker seed hull, lower nutrition). Therefore, synchrony among species is, or is not, selectively beneficial to the focus species depends on seed traits which determine gains from mast seeding at inter-specific level.  相似文献

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in modulating the neoplastic process of cancers including head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). A genetic polymorphism (rs2292832, C>T) has been recently identified in the precursor of miR-149; nevertheless its clinicopathological implications remain obscure. In this study, we showed that miR-149 is down-regulated in HNSCC compared to normal mucosa and this is associated with a poorer patient survival. In addition, HNSCC patients with the T/T genotype have more advanced tumors and a worse prognosis. Multivariate analysis indicated that patients carried the T/T genotype have a 2.81-fold (95% CI: 1.58–4.97) increased risk of nodal metastasis and 1.66-fold (95% CI: 1.05–2.60) increased risk of mortality compared to other groups. T/T genotype also predicted the worse prognosis of buccal mucosa carcinoma subset of HNSCC. In vitro analysis indicated that exogenous miR-149 expression reduces the migration of HNSCC cells. Moreover, HNSCC cell subclones carrying the pri-mir-149 sequence containing the T variant show a low processing efficacy when converting the pre-mir-149 to mature miR-149. These findings suggest that miR-149 suppresses tumor cell mobility, and that the pre-mir-149 polymorphism may affect the processing of miR-149, resulting in a change in the abundance of the mature form miRNA, which, in turn, modulates tumor progression and patient survival.  相似文献

A convenient method is described for the quantitative analysis of oxalyl thiolesters (OTEs), a newly discovered class of mammalian metabolites, in biological samples. By this particular technique the total concentration of all OTEs in the sample is determined. The method involves first reacting the biological material with cysteamine (2-aminoethanethiol) or cysteine under conditions that convert OTEs quantitatively to N-oxalylcysteamine (or N-oxalylcysteine), followed by reaction with monobromobimane to give a highly fluorescent derivative that is analyzed by reversed-phase ion-pair chromatography, with tetrabutylammonium ion as the counterion and N-(2-mercaptopropionyl)glycine as an internal standard. The method is capable of detecting as little as 0.6 pmol of the bimane derivative of the N-oxalyl compound in a single HPLC injection. The application of this method has led to the discovery that not only OTEs but also N-oxalylcysteine and N-oxalylcysteamine are normal mammalian metabolites. In various rat tissues the OTE concentration ranges up to 65 nmol/g (wet wt), the N-oxalylcysteine concentration is approximately 10 nmol/g, and the N-oxalylcysteamine concentration is 0-3 nmol/g.  相似文献

Detailed analyses regarding the effects of temperature and phospholipid fatty acid replacement on the capping of membrane immunoglobulin (mIg) have been performed using a recently described flow cytometric procedure (Cuchens, M. A., and Buttke, T. M. (1984) Cytometry 5, 601-609). Purified murine B cells were incubated for 12-20 h in the presence of bovine serum albumin-complexed 80 microM stearic (18:0), oleic (cis-18:1), or linoleic (cis, cis-18:2) free fatty acids. Unmodified and free fatty acid-treated cells were stained with fluorescein-conjugated rabbit anti-mouse Ig and subjected to pulse-shape (width) analyses to follow the kinetics of mIg capping. In both unmodified and free fatty acid-treated cells, capping of mIg occurred at all temperatures between 17 and 37 degrees C, but the rate of cap formation was temperature dependent. Arrhenius plots of mIg capping were linear, with activation energies ranging from 14 to 23 kcal/mol depending on the saturated/unsaturated fatty acid ratio of B cell phospholipids. Ligand-induced redistribution of mIg thus appears to be sensitive to changes in membrane acyl chain composition.  相似文献

Remote sensing technologies have been advanced continuously to a certain level for multi-scale applications to ease social and political concerns resulting from food security. In this study, an integrated monitoring, sensing and modeling system for estimating CO2 fixation and grain yields using a photosynthetic sterility model was developed. Input data for model computation include observed meteorological data, numerical prediction reanalysis data, and satellite data such as solar radiation, land-cover and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) on a continental scale. Model validation requires crop yields and the Crop Situation Index (CSI) was provided by the Japanese government. It also demonstrates the application potential of this system to grain fields of paddy rice, winter wheat, and maize in Southeast Asia. The carbon hydrate in grains has the same chemical formula as that of cellulose in grain vegetation. The partition of sequestered CO2 into grain, straw, and root portions of plant biomass weight was computed. The present photosynthesis model was evaluated using the mass of carbon included in the harvested grains of provincial crop production. Results indicate that the proposed system successfully estimates the photosynthesis fixation of rice reasonably well in Japan and China through the analysis of carbon in grains. However, the model tends to underestimate the photosynthesis rates for winter wheat and maize. The parameterization of radiation response function and the temperature response functions for low-temperature sterility need to be improved in the future.  相似文献

Topors is a DNA topoisomerase I- and p53-binding protein, and mainly functions as a p53 regulator. Accumulating evidence also supports the notion that Topors plays the role as a negative regulator of cell growth, and possibly as a tumor suppressor. Here, we demonstrated that Topors is also involved in normal mitotic progression, since Topors depletion delays mitotic entry and affects mitotic progression. Furthermore, Topors is degradated in response to the activation of the spindle checkpoint. Significantly, Polo-like kinase 1 (Plk1)-associated phosphorylation of Topors at S718 is essential for nocodazole-induced degradation of Topors.  相似文献
